There are several aspects to this area as follows:
-
Tuition Scholarships. Many children have dropped out of school due to the fact that their parents / families simply are not able to afford the cost of tuition and other related school costs. DOH helps to provide scholarships to needed and deserving children.
DOH is additionally focusing on supporting the education of girls. In many families where there are both boys and girls, more often than not, the girls are the first to drop out of school when the family faces economic hardships. DOH is working to address the area of girls’ education by helping to provide scholarships and support to the families to ensure that the girls stay in school. It has been proven that educating a girl contributes to the education of the entire family and the nation. This support is in alignment with the Millennium goals as recommended by the United Nations - http://www.unicef.org/mdg/gender.html

-
Educational Support - Provision of Books, teaching and School Supplies: DOH is helping to provide books, teaching and school supplies to schools and children. These supplies are warmly received and much appreciated as they help to supplement teaching resources (which can be hard to come by in Africa). Additionally, the school supplies help to relieve family financial pressure – as parents no longer have to spend meager resources acquiring these needed supplies.
-
After-School Coaching: On a limited basis, DOH is offering after-school coaching to help complement / strengthen what the children learn in school and promote further comprehension. This coaching is offered to groups of children in an informal, relaxed setting.

4. Quiz and Debating Competition: These competitions stimulate learning and help encourage children to develop their knowledge and oratory articulation skills. These skills will serve them well in life and children that perform well in these areas typically excel in school. The goal additionally is to encourage the appetite for growth, learning and development. The ability of articulate oneself in public is an important aspect of a child’s / youth’s development that is rarely addressed in the traditional school curriculum.
